What to expect during  the medical assessment

The doctor will:

  • Measure your blood pressure

  • Ask you about your past medical history

  • Perform an eye test (please note that if glasses are worn for driving this must be done by an optician)

  • Perform a brief physical examination including listening to your heart and chest

  • Complete, sign and stamp the medical form

02

How long does the medical take?

15-20 minutes usually but if your past medical history is more complicated it may take longer

04

Does the medical include an eye test?

Yes the medical does include an eye test for most people.

Please be aware however that due to changes imposed by the DVLA we are no longer obliged to complete the visual section of the form.  This normally occurs when glasses or contact lenses are worn for driving.  If the doctor cannot perform the vision assessment for any reason you will be advised to go to an optician to have this part of the form completed separately, for which they have their own charge.  This is explained in the DVLA leaflet accompanying the D4 form.
